Athletic Greens vs Opti Greens 50

Athletic Greens vs Opti Greens

Both founded in 2009, Athletic Greens AG1 and 1st Phorm (the company that produces Opti-Greens 50), are both impressive brands that have taken the health and wellbeing market by storm in just over a decade.

If you’re looking for a super greens formula, it’s no doubt that you’ve probably come across both Athletic Greens and Opti-Greens 50. So, which is better?

Every super greens formula is uniquely produced, containing different amounts of nutrition from different ingredients, ultimately providing the consumer with an individual set of health benefits.

In this article, I’m going to be comparing Athletic Greens and Opti-Greens 50. I’ll be comparing the most important factors so I can come to a final decision about which one really is the better formula.

If you’re eager to compare the two and find out which one’s the better choice, take a look at my full Athletic Greens vs Opti-Greens 50 review below.

Athletic Greens vs Opti Greens 50

What Is Athletic Greens?

Athletic Greens is without a doubt one of the most well-known super greens formulas on the market, and the popularity of this formula is only growing, with a vast number of positive customer reviews and support from athletes, celebrities, and influencers.

The brand’s success has even gone so far that in 2019, the formula was named the official supplement of the USA cycling team – quite a feat for a brand that had only been in the supplement game for a decade!

The Athletic Greens formula contains a whopping 75 ingredients, with everything from whole food super greens and digestive enzymes to adaptogens and probiotics featuring on the list.

Initially, this formula looks like it ticks all of the boxes and it’s certainly obvious why it’s had so much success.

However, one of the first things I notice about the product is that it’s made using proprietary blends, which immediately lets the formula down for me.

We will be taking a closer look at the ingredients within the formula later, so I’m not going to dive too deeply into this right now, but it’s certainly something to be aware of from the get-go.

Before we look at anything else in more detail, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of the formula as a whole!

Athletic Greens (AG1) Pouch

  • Vegan-friendly, gluten-free, sugar-free, and nut-free
  • Easily dissolvable and tastes good!
  • Popular with athletes, celebrities, and fitness influencers

Cons

  • Made using proprietary blends (no fully disclosed list of ingredients)
  • More expensive than other formulas, with a $3.23 cost per serving

What Is Opti-Greens 50?

Opti-Greens 50 by 1st Phorm, is a super greens formula that’s specifically supposed to boost the immune system. The formula contains 50 ingredients, as the formula’s name suggests, including organic grasses, superfoods, enzymes, probiotics, and prebiotics.

1st Phorm is an incredibly successful brand on the supplement market, typically specializing in fitness supplements. Since being founded in 2009, the brand has made over $100 million in sales.

Just like the Athletic Greens formula, the ingredients within the formula sound impressive, but unfortunately, all of them exist within proprietary blends.

As mentioned above, proprietary blends are my worst nightmare in supplements, as it’s impossible to figure out whether the formula will actually provide the benefits the brand claims it will.

I will be looking at this in more detail later on, but it’s important to say at this stage that both formulas contain proprietary blends.

Just as we did with the Athletic Greens formula, let’s take look at more specific areas of the formula, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of it.

Opti Greens 50 tub

Pros

  • Cheaper than Athletic Greens
  • Over 8,000 positive customer reviews

Cons

  • Proprietary blends (not a fully disclosed ingredients label)
  • Tastes grassy, even though it’s berry flavored

Athletic Greens Vs. Opti-Greens 50 Benefits

Athletic Greens

With over 70 ingredients, you’d expect the formula to deliver a multitude of health benefits, and the brand claims that it does. In fact, as well as marketing the formula’s overall health benefits, the brand actually debuts the health benefits of each ingredient.

On the Athletic Greens website, there’s a whole page dedicated to the ingredients and benefits of the formula. On this page, the brand explains the health benefits that derive from each and every ingredient.

This really shows that Athletic Greens has gone to a lot of effort to make sure the consumer knows about the health benefits, and it is really impressive.

However, I do find it incredibly strange that the brand has gone to all of this effort to talk about health benefits, but hasn’t been transparent about the amounts of ingredients within the formula – if the amounts aren’t right, these benefits won’t even occur.

Overall, the formula is supposed to support and boost the immune system, protect cells from radical damage, push toxins from the body, support the digestive system, reduce stress levels, and enhance nutrient absorption.

Opti-Greens 50

With 50 ingredients, it’s also expected that Opti-Greens 50 should provide the consumer with a wide range of health benefits and to a certain extent, it does.

Although 1st Phorm doesn’t show the benefits of every ingredient in the formula like Athletic Greens does, the brand does share the health benefits of the formula as a whole.

1st Phorm claims that the Opti-Greens 50 formula will support the digestive system and improve gut health, reduce bloating, provide a long-lasting boost of energy, protect cells from free radicals, and push toxins from the body.

Athletic Greens Vs Opti-Greens 50 Ingredients

Athletic Greens

The Athletic Greens formula is made up of 75 ingredients in total, including whole super greens, prebiotics and probiotics, adaptogens, enzymes, herbs, and extracts. All of the ingredients within the formula are vegan, gluten-free, nut-free, dairy-free, keto-friendly, paleo-friendly, and non-GMO.

Although there’s such a long list of ingredients, the ingredients all exist within proprietary blends. This means that it’s impossible for us as consumers to figure out the amount of each ingredient within the formula, so we don’t know how much we’re consuming!

It also means that we can’t figure out if the formula actually contains a sufficient amount of each ingredient for the claimed health benefits to actually occur. So really, it’s unclear whether this formula will actually work or not.

The only glimpse of hope that we do have is that the blends are heavily weighted, meaning there’s hopefully a sufficient amount of every ingredient.

Opti-Greens 50

Opti-Greens contains 50 ingredients, including fruits, vegetables, herbs, adaptogens, enzymes, and probiotics. Just like Athletic Greens, the formula is vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and non-GMO.

However, also like the Athletic Greens blend, the formula contains proprietary blends – my worst nightmare when it comes to supplements!

As mentioned above, when proprietary blends are present in a formula, it means that it’s impossible for the consumer to know how much of any ingredient resides in the formula.

Without this information, it’s impossible to figure out whether the amounts of ingredients within the formula will actually be able to provide the consumer with the health benefits that the brand claims it will.

Although the blends aren’t as heavily weighted as they are in Athletic Greens, they’re still fairly heavy, meaning that hopefully at least some of the ingredients have been added sufficiently.

Athletic Greens Vs Opti-Greens 50 Taste

Athletic Greens

Unlike most super greens formulas that have a grassy taste, the Athletic Greens formula actually tastes really pleasant. In fact, I awarded the formula 1st place on my ‘best tasting super greens’ list.

The formula is sweetened using stevia extract, getting rid of the bitterness from the natural ingredients. The formula is also flavored using papaya, broccoli powder, cherry powder, carrot, natural pineapple flavor, and natural vanilla flavor.

The formula isn’t overly sweet or overly flavored, but it’s just pleasant to drink and refreshing. In addition, the formula mixes well.

Opti-Greens 50

Opti-Greens 50 is only available in natural berry flavor, with the brand attempting to disguise the grassy taste of the natural ingredients that the formula is made up of.

The formula is flavored using, ‘natural flavors’, guar gum, xanthan gum, salt, and non-GMO corn maltodextrin.

These aren’t the healthiest flavoring ingredients, and unfortunately, they don’t actually make the formula taste like berries. Instead, you still get strong grassy hints from the ingredients within the formula.

Athletic Greens definitely tastes better than this formula and is flavored and sweetened using healthier ingredients.

Athletic Greens Vs Opti-Greens 50 Cost

Athletic Greens

Athletic Greens is more expensive than most of the super greens formulas on the market, and it’s more expensive Opti-Greens 50.

One pouch of Athletic Greens, containing 30 servings, costs $97. This works out at a cost per serving of $3.23. As mentioned above, this is much more expensive than other super greens formulas on the market.

Other super greens formulas that are around this price range or above don’t contain proprietary blends, whereas this one does.

However, Athletic Greens does offer a cheaper option to customers. If you subscribe to the formula, you can save 21%, making the cost per serving $2.56.

This is obviously a much more reasonable cost, but you would only want to subscribe if you were 100% sure you want to consume the product on a regular basis.

Opti-Greens 50

One tub of Opti-Greens 50 contains 30 servings and costs $59.99. This works out at a cost per serving of $2.00. This is a reasonable cost per serving if the formula didn’t contain proprietary blends. However, it unfortunately does!

Just like Athletic Greens, 1st Phorm offers a discounted option if you subscribe to the product. Although it’s only an 8.3% saving, it works out at cost per serving of $1.83 which sounds more reasonable and therefore could entice customers.

Athletic Greens Vs Opti-Greens 50: Which is Better?

Both Athletic Greens and Opti-Greens 50 are actually very similar to one another, making it incredibly difficult to come to a definite conclusion on which one is better.

Both formulas contain proprietary blends, and therefore I wouldn’t be rushing out to purchase either of them, as I know for a fact there are super greens formulas on the market with fully disclosed ingredients labels, for a similar price.

If you are really focused on receiving a certain amount of nutrition and you like to know exactly what you’re consuming, it’s probably best that you look elsewhere.

However, if you are set of purchasing either Athletic Greens or Opti-Greens 50, I would have to suggest that you go for Athletic Greens.

Although the Athletic Greens formula is more expensive, it contains heavier weighted blends, the brand is more information about health benefits and it tastes great. I also feel like the Athletic Green brand is more clued up when it comes to super greens and 1st Phorm is more focused on fitness supplements.
