Best Chlorella Powders & Supplements

Best Chlorella Supplements: Benefits, Drawbacks, And Comparisons

Chlorella is a single-cell green freshwater alga that you’ll probably have heard of already because it commonly features in super greens supplements. It is one of the most nutritious algae on the planet, packed with protein, iron, vitamin B12, vitamin C, antioxidants, omega-3s, and fiber.

Chlorella also provides a wide range of health benefits to the consumer – this alga will aid detoxification by binding to heavy metals, boosting the immune system, improving cholesterol levels, regulating blood pressure, protecting the cells from radical damage, and may improve physical endurance.

However, chlorella has a hard cell wall and therefore, unlike other superfoods, it has to be consumed as a supplement.

Since this is the case, there’s a vast selection of chlorella supplements out there on the market. Therefore, it can feel overwhelming when trying to figure out which supplement you should go with!

So, if you’re thinking of purchasing a chlorella supplement, check out my review of the top 5 chlorella powers below and see which one suits you best!

Top Chlorella Supplements

1Now Supplements Chlorella Powder

now-supplement-chlorella

Now Supplements produce Chlorella in powdered form and in tablets.

The powdered form has a serving size of 3g and the tablets have a serving size of 3.9g, so both versions meet the standard recommended dose of chlorella which is 2-5g!

I would personally recommend taking the powder because I think it’s easier to consume one serving of powder rather than 3 tablets! However, seeing as both forms are sufficiently dosed, it’s up to you!

Unfortunately, the brand doesn’t actually provide much information about the health benefits that consumers can expect from consuming the supplement.

Instead, the brand just informs the customer about the type of micronutrients they will receive from consuming it.

Obviously, this isn’t a problem, but for some people that don’t have nutritional knowledge and don’t know how different micronutrients will benefit them, they may be put off from buying the supplement because it’s not clear what benefits they will derive from taking it.

However, Now Supplements has been around since 1968 and is a well-known and well-respected supplement brand, so you shouldn’t have any problems when buying from this company.

The taste of the powdered formula isn’t very pleasant because it’s unflavored, but it’s also now too pungent and overwhelming so can be easily consumed or mixed into smoothies, shakes, and juices.

Obviously, the tablets don’t have a taste.

The cost per serving of the formula sits between $0.12 – $0.16, so it’s super budget-friendly!

Pros

  • High-quality formula from a trusted brand.
  • 3g-3.9g of chlorella – hits the standard recommended dose.
  • Very budget-friendly.

Cons

  • Some people might not like the taste of the formula.
  • Not a lot of information about the health benefits associated with the formula.

2Ojio Organic Chlorella Tablets

ojio-chlorella

Ojio Organic Chlorella Tablets are USDA certified organic, Soy-Free, Non-GMO, Non-Irradiated, Vegan, Certified Kosher chlorella tablets – these aren’t capsules, they’re hard tablets!

The Ojio Chlorella Tablets definitely look the most appealing, with the Ojio brand packaging and branding really popping!

The brand claims that these tablets will support overall health and wellbeing, as well as specifically boost energy levels, promote detoxification, help improve colon health, and support digestive functions.

With a serving size of 3g, the Ojio Chlorella Tablets hit the standard recommended dosage of chlorella, meaning they will certainly provide benefits.

However, the main issue with this supplement is that to reach the serving size you have to consume 12 tablets!

I don’t know about you, but I am quite opposed to taking 12 of the same tablets every day – it’s just not easy and quick!

Nonetheless, if you’re happy to do this, this supplement may be the one for you.

The cost per serving of this supplement works out at $0.33, which is still incredibly cost-effective!

Pros

  • 3g of chlorella – meets the standard recommended dose.
  • Beautifully packaged and appealing!
  • Low-cost.

Cons

  • The serving size is 12 tablets.

3Sunlit Chlorella Tablets

sunlit-chlorella

Sunlit Chlorella Tablets are cold-pressed, non-GMO, gluten-free, vegan, third-party tested chlorella tablets from Taiwan.

The tablets are 250mg each, and although the serving size recommended by the brand is 3g (meeting the recommended dose), it means you will have to consume 12 tablets per day, just like the tablets by Ojio!

Just like Now Supplements, there’s not a lot of information provided by Sunlit about the health benefits associated with these tablets.

Instead, the brand gives information about the micronutrients that these tablets provide.

Just as I said with the Now Supplements Chlorella tablets, it’s not a problem that Sunlit hasn’t given basic information about the health benefits associated with these tablets, but it may put people off that aren’t very well aware of benefits associated with specific nutrients.

The cost per serving of the Sunlit Chlorella Tablets works out at $0.36, and although this is slightly more expensive than other supplements listed in this review, it’s still very reasonably priced.

Pros

  • 3g serving size – hits the standard recommended dose.
  • Budget-friendly.
  • Over 1,300+ positive reviews online.

Cons

  • Not clear about the benefits of the powder.
  • You have to take 12 tablets to get the serving size.

4Micro Ingredients Chlorella

micro-ingredients-chlorella

Micro Ingredients Pure Organic Chlorella powder is a non-irradiated, USDA-certified organic, vegan, non-GMO powder.

This powder has a serving size of 3g, which hits the recommended dose of chlorella, just like the other supplements in this review.

However, rather than having to take 12 tablets, you just use one scoop of powder, which is much more beneficial!

However, unfortunately, like other brands in this review, Micro Ingredients doesn’t give a lot of basic health benefits information about the tablets but instead gives information about the micronutrients within the tablets.

Again, this isn’t great for those with little knowledge about nutrition, but it’s not actually detrimental to the efficacy of the tablets, obviously.

The taste of this powder isn’t particularly pleasant, but it’s not too grassy or overpowering either. Therefore, it’s easy to cover up the taste of the powder in a smoothie, shake, or juice.

The cost per serving of this powder sits at $0.33, which is slightly more expensive than other supplements on this list, but still very budget-friendly!

Overall, this is a powerful chlorella powder that supplies the right amount of chlorella, tastes good, and is cost-effective. The only downside is that the brand isn’t very transparent about the benefits associated with the powder.

Pros

  • 3g – hits the standard recommended dose of chlorella.
  • Tastes pleasant.
  • Budget-friendly.

Cons

  • Not much information about the benefits of the formula.

5Anthony’s Organic Chlorella Powder

anthony-chlorella

Anthony’s Organic Chlorella Powder is a USDA-certified organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, vegan chlorella powder produced by the US-based company Anthony’s Goods.

The powder’s serving size is 3g, hitting the standard recommended dose of chlorella, and surprisingly for an unflavored chlorella powder, it actually tastes fairly pleasant!

You can easily consume this powder with water if you’re used to consuming greens powders, or it can be added to smoothies and shakes if you’re still not used to the earthy taste of unflavored greens.

The brand gives information about the micronutrients within the powder but doesn’t provide any information about the health benefits that consumers can expect to experience when consuming this formula.

This seems to be a common occurrence with chlorella supplements and seems like such a shame! Brands need to start realizing that not everyone knows everything about nutrition!

The cost per serving of this formula works out at $0.20 which is incredibly cheap and definitely doable for people on a budget!

Pros

  • 3g of chlorella in one scoop – hits the recommended dose.
  • Tastes pleasant.
  • Very budget-friendly.

Cons

  • No information about the health benefits associated with the formula.

I always recommend anyone who’s pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, with a medical condition, or taking medication to consult a medical professional before consuming a new supplement.
