Mixture of berries high in polyphenols

Best Polyphenol Supplements: Our Top 5 Picks

Polyphenols are naturally occurring compounds that are found in fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices, and even dark chocolate.

There are more than 8,000 specific types of polyphenols, but there are three main groups – flavonoids, phenolic acids, and polyphenolic acids.

Polyphenols have a wide range of health benefits, but eating a diet that is rich in polyphenols is often hard for people, especially for those that have busy lives and don’t necessarily have the time to focus on their nutritional intake!

Therefore, polyphenol supplements have risen in popularity over the last decade, with more and more people reaching for a scoop of powder or a capsule to deliver the benefits that are associated with polyphenols.

What Do Polyphenols Do?

Polyphenols act as antioxidants – they protect the body from free radicals, push toxins from the body, and reduce inflammation.

Specifically, polyphenols are linked with reducing blood sugar levels, reducing the likelihood of heart disease, boosting brain function, promoting healthier digestion, and reducing the risk of conditions such as cancer and diabetes.

5 Best Polyphenol Supplements

Clearly, polyphenols are powerful and can provide a range of important health benefits, attracting a lot of people towards consuming them!

So, if you’re interested in taking a polyphenol supplement, here is my list of the 5 best polyphenol supplements out there.

1Country Farms Super Reds

Country Farms Super Reds

Country Farms Super Reds is a popular polyphenol and super reds formula on the supplement market, and I’ve mentioned it in my top super reds supplement list!

The formula contains over 40 ingredients, including fruit, vegetables, herbal extracts, and fiber. The formula is packed with polyphenols, from resveratrol to bioflavonoids.

The brand claims that the formula is supposed to boost energy levels, promote better heart and circulatory health, protect cells from radical change, boost brain function, and reduce signs of aging.

Country Farms Super Reds is also USDA-certified organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, dairy-free, and suitable for vegans. Therefore, meaning it’s suitable for a wide range of people and only contains the best possible ingredients.

The Super Reds formula is also budget-friendly, with a cost per serving of $0.75, meaning it’s perfect for those with both a small budget and those that are just looking for a cheap “pick me up” additional supplement.

However, unfortunately, the formula contains a proprietary blend, meaning it’s impossible to know if the formula will contain sufficiently dosed ingredients. Although, the blend is very substantially dosed, totaling 5.36g.

Therefore, it’s likely that at least some of the ingredients are sufficiently dosed and if they are, they will provide benefits!

Overall, Country Farms Super Reds is a good polyphenol supplement, especially since it’s low-cost and therefore perfect for anyone, regardless of their budget!

The formula also has a vast number of positive reviews, it tastes good, is USDA certified organic, and is made by a well-known, trusted brand!

Pros

  • Over 40 powerful ingredients with a wide range of polyphenols.
  • Low-cost.
  • USDA-certified organic.

Cons

  • Contains a proprietary blend, meaning it’s unclear if the formula contains sufficiently dosed ingredients.

2Vital Reds

Vital Reds Supplement

Vital Reds is a well-known super reds formula produced by Gundry MD. The formula, much like the Country Farms Super Reds formula, contains over 40 ingredients, featuring fruit, vegetables, herbal extracts, and probiotics.

Gundry MD claims that the formula will boost energy levels, reduce bloating, improve digestion, support the health and appearance of the skin, and help to keep the consumer’s weight under control.

Although the formula does contain three proprietary blends, which isn’t great since it’s unclear how much of each ingredient exists within the formula, it does have an entire polyphenol blend. The polyphenol blend contains 34 polyphenol-rich ingredients, such as grape seed extract and flaxseed.

Unfortunately, this blend isn’t incredibly heavy in weighting, with it totaling only 1,540mg. Therefore, not all of the ingredients may be sufficiently dosed and provide benefits.

Although, since customer reviews are positive and people have reported changes in their health when taking the formula, at least some of the ingredients will work and provide polyphenols to the consumer.

The Gundry MD Vital Reds formula is a little expensive, (and much more expensive than the Country Farms Super Reds!), with a cost per serving of $2.33.

Pros

  • Popular brand.
  • Specific polyphenol blend.
  • 34 polyphenol rich ingredients.
  • Disclosed electrolyte amounts.

Cons

  • Contains proprietary blends.
  • More expensive than other polyphenols supplements on the market.

3Now Supplements Extra Strong Grape Seed Extract

Extra Strength Grape Seed

Now Supplements Extra Strong Grape Seed Extract is a capsule supplement that contains only three polyphenol ingredients.

The capsules contain more than four times the grape seed extract in the regular Now Supplement Grape Seed Extract formula, meaning it provides extremely strong polyphenol benefits.

The brand states that these highly concentrated capsules can improve the health of the bones, kidney, brain, and tissues, as well as boost the immune system, and reduce oxidative and metabolic stress.

The ingredients label of the capsules is fully disclosed, meaning it’s possible to see how much of each ingredient exists within each capsule.

The formula contains 250mg and the recommended dose of grape seed extract is between 100-300mg, meaning it is sufficiently dosed and will therefore provide benefits to the consumer.

The other ingredients within the formula do not have standard recommended doses and therefore it’s impossible to know if they will provide benefits to the consumer.

The capsules are also non-GMO, soy-free, dairy-free, egg-free, nut-free, gluten-free, and suitable for vegans. Therefore, they’re suitable for a wide range of people.

The recommended serving is 1-2 capsules, and therefore the cost per serving of the supplement sits between $0.33 – $0.66.The formula is incredibly cheap, regardless of whether you take one or two capsules per day.

The only downside to the capsules is that although there are an array of positive customer reviews, some of the more negative reviews are concerning – people report having heart palpitations and raised blood pressure.

Pros

  • Popular brand.
  • Fully disclosed label.
  • Sufficiently dosed and powerful grape seed extract.

Cons

  • Some concerning negative customer reviews.

4Purely Beneficial Resveratrol 1450

Resveratrol 1450

Purely Beneficial Resveratrol 1450 is a polyphenol capsule supplement. The capsule contains 11 polyphenol ingredients, clearly with the main ingredient being resveratrol.

Purely Beneficial claims that the capsules support heart and vascular health, help to reduce blood pressure, reduce the signs of aging, promote endurance, protect the cells from free radical change, and push toxins from the body.

Unfortunately, all of the ingredients within the capsules, apart from the vitamin C, exist within proprietary blends. This, therefore, means that it’s impossible to know how much of each ingredient exists within the formula and if they’re sufficiently dosed and will provide benefits.

Although, the capsules are incredibly low-cost. The recommended serving of the formula is $0.29.

Therefore, although the formula may not contain incredibly sufficiently dosed ingredients, it is incredibly low cost and therefore could be worth it if you’re on a small budget.

Pros

  • Low-cost.
  • Wide range of ingredients.

Cons

  • Contains proprietary blends and therefore may not be sufficiently dosed.

5Nature's Way Super Reds

Nature's Way Super Reds

Nature’s Way Super Reds is a super reds formula that contains 23 ingredients, including fruit, vegetables, prebiotics, probiotics, and herbal extracts.

Although the formula isn’t specifically marketed as a polyphenol supplement, the formula does contain polyphenol ingredients such as acerola berry extract, spirulina, and sumac berry.

The brand claims that the formula will boost energy levels, support vitality, protect cells from radical damage, push toxins from the body, and improve digestion.

The formula has a fully disclosed ingredients label which is great to see because it’s clear how much of each ingredient exists within the formula.

Although the majority of the ingredients don’t have standard recommended doses, at least some of them are likely to be sufficiently dosed, or at least provide some health benefits to the consumer.

The cost of the Super Reds formula is a little pricey, with a cost per serving of $2.07. So, it might not be the best choice if you have a low budget.

Pros

  • Fully disclosed ingredients label.
  • Range of polyphenol ingredients.

Cons

  • Some of the ingredients may not be sufficiently dosed.
  • Slightly more expensive than other formulas on the market.

Frequently Asked Questions About Polyphenols – Answered!

Can Everyone Take Polyphenol Supplements?

Although naturally occurring polyphenols are safe for most people, polyphenol supplements are typically much stronger than the polyphenols you receive from food sources.

Therefore, polyphenol supplements might not be suitable for everyone.

There will be advice on who and who shouldn’t take every specific supplement out there, but in general, those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, or with medical conditions shouldn’t take polyphenol supplements.

Do Polyphenol Supplements Have Side Effects?

One of the reasons certain people take polyphenol supplements is because consuming food sources that contain naturally occurring polyphenol causes them side effects such as bloating, gas, or stomach pain.

However, polyphenol supplements will typically not give the consumer any side effects!

Although, for information about side effects you do need to take a look at the specific supplement but this depends on which supplement you purchase.

What Foods Are Rich In Polyphenols?

Different groups of polyphenols are found in different foods. For example, flavonoids, which make up around 60% of polyphenols, are found in foods such as cabbage, onions, apples, and dark chocolate.

Phenolic acids, which make up around 30% of polyphenols, can be found in seeds and grains. Polyphenolic amides, much less common polyphenols, can be found in peppers and chilies.

The commonly used polyphenol, resveratrol, can be found in grapes and red wine.

The Last Word

Polyphenol supplements can be incredibly useful for those that feel as if they’re not consuming enough polyphenols through their diet (which most people aren’t!), or for those that want a little extra support in protecting their body from free radicals and inflammation.

If you’re looking for a polyphenol supplement, just remember to choose one that ticks as many boxes as possible – it should have a disclosed ingredients label, contain sufficiently dosed ingredients, have a substantial serving size, be reasonably priced, and be sold by a trusted brand!
