Hawaiian Spirulina Powder

Hawaiian Spirulina Powder Review

Nutrex Hawaii has been in business a lot longer than most of the supplement brands on the market, and the Hawaiian Spirulina formula it produces has been around for three decades.

The Hawaiian Spirulina powder contains 100% pure spirulina from Hawaii, as the name suggests. Nutrex claims that the powder will boost the immune system, support normal cholesterol, support a healthy and energetic lifestyle by providing nourishment and support overall cellular health.

As the company and this specific product have been around for so long, therefore proving a success, I'm really intrigued by this powder. In contrast to other green superfood powders, this supplement focuses on just one ingredient!

I’m keen to take a closer look at the powder, to see if it really can provide the consumer with the benefits the brand claims it can. So, let’s take a closer look – view my review of Hawaiian Spirulina Powder by Nutrex below.

First Impression of Hawaiian Spirulina Powder

The Nutrex website has a really clinical aesthetic, and it already sets you up to believe that you’ll benefit greatly from whatever it is this brand produces. The main thing that really comes across however is how informative the site is, especially when it comes to product information.

Taking a look at the Hawaiian Spirulina Powder on the site, every single question you can think of has already been answered. It’s really amazing that the brand has put such an emphasis on transparency, as this is something that’s often missing in the supplement market.

The Hawaiian Spirulina Powder bottle and pouch branding, however, is really outdated. There’s nothing wrong with the branding as it’s simple yet informative, but it probably won’t appeal or stand out to younger adult audiences.

Nonetheless, my first impression of the Hawaiian Spirulina Powder is good, and I really appreciate the transparency the brand shows from the outset.

The company also produces Hawaiian Astaxanthin supplement that aims to help athletes with their performance.

Background on Nutrex Hawaii

Founded in 1990, Nutrex Hawaii was brought to life in Kailua-Kona by Dr. Gerald Cysewski. Dr. Cysewski is a world expert in microalgae and carotenoids, making him very well qualified to create a spirulina formula.

Unlike other brands that use Spirulina powders from other sources, Nutrex has a microalgae farm on the Kona coast and uses its own spirulina to create the powder. This type of spirulina is a superior strain, and the brand claims it harnesses more nutrition, gram per gram, than any other Spirulina on the market.

The brand only produces one other product – BioAstin Hawaiian Astaxanthin. This is one of the most potent natural antioxidants in the world. So, it’s very clear that the brand knows what it’s doing and is good at what it does.

Hawaiian Spirulina Powder Ingredients

As mentioned above, the only ingredient within the Hawaiian Spirulina Powder is pure Spirulina. Nutrex recommends a serving size of 3g. Nutrex produces the Spirulina in both a powdered formula and in tablets.

The tablets are 1000mg each, and therefore Nurex recommends taking one tablet three times a day – to make 3g. Whereas with the powdered form, it’s one scoop of 3g per day.

Hawaiian Spirulina Powder label

Although the ingredients list isn’t lengthy, due to the fact that there’s only one ingredient, Nurex shows the amount of each and every vitamin, mineral, carotenoid, and phytonutrients within the powder.

This shows exactly how transparent the brand is, and it’s really impressive that the team behind the brand has gone to such great lengths to ensure the consumer knows the exact nutrient content within the powder.

In addition, the Spirulina grown by Nurex is 100% vegetarian and vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free, lactose-free, soy-free, pesticide-free, herbicide-free, and solvent-free.

How does Hawaiian Spirulina Powder Taste?

Obviously, with Hawaiian Spirulina as the only ingredient within this product, the brand hasn’t tried to add any flavoring of any kind. That might scare some people and make them apprehensive about taking the product.

However, the powder does not have an overpowering taste, and it doesn’t taste particularly grassy either. It actually tastes pure and refreshing. Although, if you’re not a fan of the taste, you can easily mix this into smoothies or shakes.

In fact, Nutrex actually has a Spirulina recipe page on its website, informing the consumer how they can add the formula to smoothies, salads, lunches, desserts, and even facial treatments.

Alternatively, you can purchase the tablets instead of the powder and you don’t have to deal with any taste at all!

Side Effects

There shouldn’t be any side effects when consuming this product and the brand hasn’t added any warning labels to it. In fact, Nutrex recommends this product as perfect for all the family, saying children can benefit from consuming the formula too.

The only recommendation from the brand is that children start with a smaller dose of the powder and that pregnant women might want to consult their doctor before consuming.

Does Hawaiian Spirulina Powder Work?

One of the things I’m most impressed by when it comes to this product is how transparent the brand is with showing the consumer exactly what they are consuming.

By providing all of this information, the consumer can easily and clearly see whether they are taking the recommended daily dose of the ingredient, and receiving the right amount of nutrients.

Nutrex recommends a serving size of 3g, which is the perfect serving of Spirulina. According to Healthline, the recommended daily amount of Spirulina is between 2-3g. Therefore, this product is supplying the consumer with the correct amount of Spirulina, and it should provide the benefits it claims to.

Although the tablets only contain 1,000mg of Spirulina, Nutrex recommends a dosage of three tablets per day, therefore making the daily recommended amount.

So, this product should work, and it supplies the consumer with exactly what it says it will!

Hawaiian Spirulina Powder Reviews

Taking a look at Amazon at the product reviews, the Hawaiian Spirulina formula scores 4.6 stars out of 5 stars, with over 1,000 customer reviews.

The majority of people are extremely happy with the product, but those that don’t have concerns about adverse effects, which can be concerning.

However, it has to be said that not everyone’s bodies work the same. In addition, on one of the reviews that mention side effects, this person has been taking 6 tablets a day, instead of 3, and therefore that could be why they experienced adverse effects.

Let’s take a look selection of the reviews below:

This stuff is a gift from God I live off this stuff for my protein needs. I weaned off of meat using this and I get the faster recovery and muscle growth with Spirulina protein with all the extra raw nutrients without the cooked fats, proteins, hormones antibiotics that meat leaves behind. Love love love. Makes me feel very euphoric too.5-star review

I wanted to love this product because of all the positive health benefits of spirulina. I started taking the product a little over a month ago and my husband and co-workers started noticing a distinct fish smell emanating from me when I would walk by or after working out. I've had to stop taking it. I was taking the recommended 6 tablets a day. It made me regular, my allergies seemed to subside, and I had lots more energy. I'm really bummed but I can't walk around smelling like fish every day. Super disappointed!3-star review

hardly ever write reviews but felt like I had to warn people. This stuff is dangerous. I took a teaspoon for 13 days in a row as part of the Medical Medium Heavy Metal Detox Smoothly. I felt fine the first day then the second day I noticed that I was tired, dizzy and a little out of it with mild stomach cramps. I thought it was part of the detox effect. Day by day it got worse until I woke up in the middle of the last night drenched in sweat with horrible chills, racing heart, and upset stomach. I was up for hours scared that something was seriously wrong with me. It took me a good 4-5 days to get this stuff out of my system and feel better.1-star review

Where to buy Hawaiian Spirulina Powder?

You can purchase the Hawaiian Spirulina powder from the Nutrex Hawaii website directly, or through Amazon.

Is It Worth The Price?

A 16oz bottle of Hawaiian Spirulina Powder costs $45.99 on a one time purchase. The bottle contains 151 servings and therefore this works out at a cost per serving of $0.30. If you choose to subscribe to the product, you can save 10%.

This is insanely cheap in comparison to other superfood formulas and supplements.

Of course, this only contains Spirulina, but the fact that the brand is so transparent and the powder will actually work and it’s this price is impressive.

When it comes to shipping, the brand ships to anywhere in the USA for a flat fee of $5.95 and anything over $75 if free. It can be bought worldwide, but shipping fees and the countries that it can be shipped to isn’t mentioned.

My Verdict

I’m really impressed by Nurex’s Hawaiian Spirulina Powder.

This product does exactly what it says it’s going to, as well as being cost-effective and not tasting like grass.

I would definitely recommend this product for anyone looking for a Spirulina boost, and it’s obvious why the brand has been going for so long – they operate in a transparent and impressive manner!

What's worth thinking about though is if you're willing to invest a little more then you can get a multi-ingredient greens formula that delivers more nutrients in one go.

  1. I read one other review about Hawaiian Spinula really knocking it,
saying things about FDA paying visits and then the possibility of “inviormental contamination”… His focus was on other “unbiased recommendations”
About the review of woman smelling like “fish” that sounds more like a yeast infection!!
I WAS CONCERNED BECAUSE MY WIFE IN PHILIPPINES WAS GIVEN A PRECRIPTION FOR A BRAND IN PHILIPPINES!!!
DID MY RESEARCH!!! Their facility is inside but the algae comes from great depths & has FDA on its label!!! Tried to find it here FOR ME but no luck so I will go with the Hawaiian..
