May 2019 Monthly Update5 min read
It’s that time of the month again when I take a quick look back over the previous month. I look at how money I have invested is doing and how productive I have been with my personal goals.
It was my birthday this month, I am now 45 blimey… I am feeling old now!
Hopefully I am getting wiser, although sometimes really doesn’t feel like it. 😉
It’s been another interesting month with some highs and some lows. Finally got my supplement into my fulfilment center and ready to start selling there is a big but though. More on this bit later.
So, lets kick off with how my investments have been doing in May 2019.
Investment Portfolio Update
My net worth is showing a decline from last month of around 0.5%. This is not surprising as I needed to invest in my business and pay for living expenses.
I am making changes to some of my investments and will go into these further below.
I have been speaking to a friend recently who has been explaining the benefits of Singaporean REITS (Real Estate Investment Trusts). He has open my eyes to an option of owning property without the hassle of managing and securing tenants.
Singaporeans are absolutely preoccupied with property and so there are lots of REIT options to choose from. I am investigating this a possible opportunity to add to my existing investments.
If you have been watching the news you will know that crypto has seen another great month with the price hovering around $8,800 for Bitcoin.
Certainly, I am in profit now but going to keep hold of cryptocurrency for bit longer and see how this year works out.
If we start to see another bull run of 2017 with prices reaching $20k then it will be tempting to sell and make a nice return.
SaxoSelect Discretionary Trading Account
So, the big news here is I closed out and sold the discretionary trading account. Really disappointed with this to be honest as in Q4 2018 this did incredibly well, but in 2019 most months were losing trades.
This meant overall, I made no money from this investment as I closed it at the same value as I put in. On the plus side didn’t lose anything!
Ascott Residence Trust (Ascott REIT)
As highlighted above, I took an interest in REITS this month and having looked at 4-5 Singapore based companies I went with Ascott Residence Trust ( SGX: A68U ).
Ascott REIT invest primarily in serviced residences, rental housing properties, hospitals in USA, Asia, Australia and UK. Their a big player and own a lot of property.
The dividend yield was strong and is one of the reasons I am looking to invest into REITS more going forward, it can be a healthy way to get dividend income. In fact looking over the 12 years of trading they have consistently produced a 5+% dividend yield.
Using my SaxoSelect trading account as the broker and buying from the Singapore exchange means you don’t get hit by withholding tax like the US stock markets.
Art of FX – Steady Growth
May saw profits of 1.2% and so my account is up 16.7% from when I first invested 12 months ago.
Repeating myself here, slow and steady each month but can’t complain with over 15% return per annum.
TCM Hedge Fund
The performance has been disappointing so far this year for TCM and has yet to make any real gains and sitting at around 10% drawdown. I am conflicted with this as keen to see how it plays out but don’t have the appetite to see further drawdowns or lack of any upward momentum.
Goal Progress for May 2019
This month I was keen to tackle what I believe to be my shopping problem. When I say problem it’s because I am overspending and having no monthly salary income means I can’t go crazy.
I started off well controlling spending but soon spiralled around the middle of the month with buying; washing machine, 65’’ TV, couple of T-shirts/shorts, TUMI bag, Oura Ring, books and pictures for the wall!
In terms of wins though, there were a few this month for my personal goals.
I tried hypnotherapy to stop picking my fingers, a 30-year old habit that I was desperate to break. A two-hour session with Nick and I managed to get this under control, it was hard not to be impressed by this.
Although I haven’t completely stopped and did have a little relapse the habit has certainly reduced. I will need to book a follow-up appointment in 1-2 weeks time.
I have started experimenting with 24-hour fasts each week to see how this goes for weight loss but also to experience hunger for a short period of time. A bit of hardship albeit in a small way I believe is good to experience now and then. And since training and competing in Triathlon years ago, very rarely do I find that I put my body through any discomfort.
May 2019 Summary
I experienced a few realisations this month when I set aside time to reflect upon what I want in life. So much so, that I started an article about what my personal vision is – what do I want in life?
The post is nearly ready and will go up in a few weeks.
What I can say for sure is I realised my favourite food is Sashimi Salmon. I enjoy eating this once or twice per week now alongside some Tofu, amazing!
My supplement brand is almost ready to launch and way overdue now. The next hurdle to climb is that of merchant processing, it’s a lot more difficult these days to get decent payment processing. Once I have this resolved I can start selling my Super Greens brand.
I can’t wait!
So, until next time, have an awesome month and see you soon.
