Ryze Vs MUD WTR – Which Mushroom Coffee is Better?

Did you know that mushrooms have the power to supercharge your health? That’s why I am comparing Ryze vs MUD WTR, two popular mushroom coffee brands.

Further, did you know that getting in your daily dose of fungi is as simple as opting for a mushroom coffee?

If not… then this review is for you.

In it we’ll be comparing and contrasting two of the industry’s more popular mushroom coffees: an adaptogen-heavy product called MUDWTR and an MCT-rich blend from the brand RYZE coffee.

Ryze Vs MUD WTR Review: Who Makes Them?

Before getting into the nitty-gritty details, let’s overview the brands behind these mushroom coffee products.

RYZE

RYZE is a relatively new brand founded by Andrée Werner and Rashad Hossain in 2019.

One thing I like about RYZE is that they specialize in mushroom coffee and presumably aren’t having their attention diluted by other products.

MUD\WTR First Impressions

MUD\WTR is a slightly more established brand founded in 2018 by Shane Heath.

On a personal mission to find something that worked like coffee without the jitters, Heath realized that mushrooms were more than up for the job.

He also ended up realizing that he wasn’t alone in this mission.

MUDWTR quickly picked up investors from Thrive Market and Unilever Ventures, and to this day, the brand is said to be a great place to work!

MUD\WTR’s website is also pretty stellar.

With sleek visuals and just the right balance of information and minimalism, I’m pretty impressed by how this brand carries itself!

The Mud formula itself also features some pretty slick visuals.

But is MUDWTR’s product as powerful as its marketing plan?

More on that next.

Ryze Vs MUD WTR: Ingredients Lists

Both Ryze and MUDWTR are centered around mushrooms, containing 15-20 calories per serving. Beyond these qualities, though, they’re quite different from each other!

Ryze Ingredients List

  • RYZE Organic Mushroom Blend (2,000mg total)
    • Cordyceps
    • Reishi
    • King Trumpet
    • Shiitake
    • Lion’s Mane
    • Turkey Tail (Organic)
  • MCT Oil
  • Coffee

Like so many nutraceutical products, RYZE’s mushroom coffee uses proprietary blends.

That means we don’t know exactly how much Cordyceps/Reishi/etc. are in it.

Here are the Ryze supplement facts:

MUD WTR Ingredients List

MUDWTR’s ingredients are even more mysterious.

In addition to being unable to see much of any given ingredient it contains, we don’t even see how much of any given ingredient is there!

In other words, MUD\WTR contains 14 key ingredients, with most of them being placed into proprietary blends.

Neither the ingredients nor the blends have their quantities stated.

That’s not good.

Ryze Vs MUD WTR: What About Health Benefits?

In theory, at least, both RYZE and MUDWTR have numerous health benefits, especially because both focus on the benefits of mushrooms.

Here’s a closer look at the possibilities.

RYZE’s Potential Health Benefits

RYZE Mushroom Coffee’s actual mushroom blend totals 2,000 milligrams per serving.

Given that the minimum effective doses of Cordyceps, Reishi, Lion’s Mane, and Shiitake total over 4,000 milligrams per serving, RYZE may be tricky to dose.

Some studies suggest a 4,000mg dosage of Cordyceps alone! (Source)

A single serving of it may not provide enough shrooms to facilitate tangible health improvements.

MUD WTR’s Potential Health Benefits

MUD\WTR contains just 1/7th the caffeine that normal coffee does — yet it’s purported to possess many of the same brain-boosting, naturally energizing effects.

The brand dedicates certain health benefits to each key ingredient, which is a somewhat detail-oriented touch.

According to the brand's website:

“Lion’s Mane [adds] to support memory and focus.”

Ryze Vs MUD WTR: Do They Have Side Effects?

Both RYZE and MUDWTR are thought to be pretty low in side effects.

That’s because the mushrooms they contain are safe and well-tolerated by almost everyone.

Both brands, however, recommend that pregnant and/or breastfeeding women consult with their doctor before consuming.

Those under age 18 may also wish to stay away from these products, thanks to their caffeine content.

Ryze Vs MUD WTR: What Do Customers Think?

Neither RYSE nor MUDWTR is available on Amazon, which means we don’t have access to what are typically the least biased reviews.

The brands do have some pretty positive reviews on their respective websites, however…

RYZE’s Customer Reviews

As of August 2022, RYZE’s Mushroom Coffee formula has over 4,600 reviews.

The average review comes in at a (very impressive) 4.9 stars out of 5.

One customer successfully broke their coffee addiction with the help of RYZE:

“Leaving traditional coffee seemed impossible but I really adapted to this routine and renewed my subscription. I don't know if I feel better because of the mushrooms or the reduced caffeine, and I don't care. I like to use the MCT creamer and I float some steamed almond milk on top.”

Less impressed customers, however, claim that RYZE tastes nothing like coffee.

As is so often the case with plant-based supplements, the taste is a highly individual matter!

MUD WTR’s Customer Reviews

MUD\WTR’s website is home to well over 3,500 reviews.

The average review is 5 stars out of 5, though we’re guessing this figure doesn’t factor in many (if any) decimal points.

Just like RYZE, MUDWTR is capable of helping users break their coffee addiction:

“I have a cup every morning and I feel no regret about leaving coffee behind… 2 months ago. I not only feel good drinking it but I feel good about my choice. Company culture is pretty impressive too.”

Another customer likes the complex flavors of MUDWTR:

“[…It’s] this cool chai-cocoa hybrid, with all that warm spice & earthy sweetness. Coffee, on the other hand, gives me those smoky, bitter notes. If you're only drinking coffee for the energy, then yeah, MUDWTR's got you covered. But if you actually enjoy the taste of coffee, keep your favorite roast handy and enjoy MUDWTR as its own thing.”

Less favorable reviews say that MUDWTR is hard to blend.

Ryze Vs MUD WTR: How Are they Priced?

Both RYZE and MUDWTR could do better when it comes to how they’re priced.

RYZE Price And Refund Policy

Each pouch of RYZE Mushroom Coffee contains 30 servings and costs $36, making for an average price of $1.20 per serving.

With a subscription these numbers are brought down to $30 per month/$1 per serving.

Not bad, not bad at all!

RYZE doesn’t have a money-back guarantee, though.

If you don’t like it or don’t experience any benefits, the cost is still on you.

MUD WTR’s Price And Refund Policy

MUDWTR costs $50 for a one-time purchase ($1.66 per serving) or $40 for a subscription ($1.33 per serving).

At first glance, that makes it more expensive than RYZE, but keep in mind that this product’s serving sizes are larger.

And you can bring the cost-per-serving down to $1.11 by buying in bulk.

Yet MUD\WTR doesn’t offer a money-back guarantee, either.

The brand only accepts returns if products are sent back unused and unopened.

Ryze Vs MUD WTR: Where To Buy

Buy RYZE Mushroom Coffee from the RYZE website here, or buy Mud from their website here.

Ryze Vs MUD WTR: Which I Would Choose

While I do appreciate the idea of people swapping out their coffee for adaptogenic mushroom blends, I wish that both RYZE and MUDWTR made more of an effort to be transparent with their customers.

The positive reviews of both brands mean their products work—we don’t know exactly how well.

The ideal choice for you likely depends on your goals. If you’re hoping for something as close to regular coffee as possible, consider RYZE (it contains a little coffee, after all).

If you’re just looking for an earthy, energizing blend, however, consider opting for MUDWTR.

  1. I just finished a month of Ryze and got my first shipment of Mud WTR today. I had great results with Ryze, good energy and lost some gut bloat. Ryze flavor took a bit of getting used to and I needed to add creamer to help with the “earthy” taste. My first cup of Mud WTR definitely tastes better thanks to the cinnamon and Coriander. I am hopeful the MUD WTR will provide the same energy and gut health. I should know in the next few days.

  2. Could you compare md/wtr and beyond brew as well? Looking for a mushroom coffee that actually doses the correct amount of mushrooms if you have a suggestion.

  3. I have been using Ryze. I do not drink it every day just when I have a taste for coffee. I drink it with a little bit of organic oat milk, and or Sugar-free unsweetened, vanilla, almond milk. I thoroughly enjoy it and I think it tastes good. However I am excited to try mud wtr. Only because of the anti-inflammatory ingredients. But then I was thinking I could always add those things to my Ryze coffee.?
However, I am going to try mud/wtr and possibly I’ll just switch off between the two whenever, depending out what I feel like.

  4. I absolutely love my Mudwtr! I feel amazing results! It tastes yummy and I’ve not had issues with it separating before consuming it all. I’ll stick to my mud! Thanks for the review. I’d been wondering about Ryze but glad I chose the Mud.

  5. Thank you very much for your review on these two products. I very much appreciate it. I have been considering trying one of these two still undecided. Wondering if maybe vitamin supplements of a combination of mushrooms would be more effective just adding it to my own coffee? Either way I’ll keep looking around. Thanks again. Leticia Correa

  6. great concepts – Ryze, Mud/wtr. But w/o knowing the ingredient dosages, for all I know they could be making a homeopathic brew concoction with fancy marketing. Lots of fluff, but little substance. I think I will avoid these products. Either way, great structure and content of your review. thank you!

  7. Thank you for your research and information on these 2 products. I am trying to find something to replace coffee and couldn’t decide between the two. Because of this info I have decided to make my own. I know it will be more work but at least I will know how much of what is in it. Again, thank you!

  8. Do not use MUD/WTR! Me and I’ve now found many other people have been charged after closing our accounts & canceled subscriptions, and they refuse to pay for shipping on the refund even with screenshots of proof that we closed our accounts & canceled subscriptions days or weeks before the mysterious, unauthorized charge.

My attorney (retainer for my company) mentioned the FTC said a lot of online subscription companies are doing this illegally to get more money from their customers and that they are trying to crack down on it.

I have reported this experience to the FTC and I encourage you to do the same if this has happened to you from MUD/WTR.

  9. I’ve been using MUDWTR for years but decided to try RYZE. I prefer the taste of RYZE and I am pleased that it doesn’t settle as much as MUD so I don’t have to stir it before every sip

    1. I just started drinking Mudwtr and didn’t do any research first. The constant separating is a pain. You have to constantly be stirring. But that gets me thinking. If Ryze doesn’t separate like that, are you really getting as much out of it?

      1. I haven’t tried Mudwtr, but i do use Ryze. I found that it separated and was annoying until I got one of those electronic frother thingies. I just pour a little boiling water in the Ryze and mix with the frother for 15-20 seconds and it totally solved the separating. it’s a bit thicker for the last few sips, but not powdery sludge like before I got the frother.

    2. I’ve been drinking mudwtr for a couple years now and love the results. I hated the separation too. I found that there is a process (and secret ingredient) that will minimize that. 1. Add mudwtr and any other dry ingredients ( sweetener, and I actuality add instant coffee)
      2. Add just a tiny bit of water ( just enough to make “mud”)
      3. Use mudwtr wisp and blend
      4. Add 2 tbls (or more to taste) of heavy whipping cream
      5. Most important step: Blend for at least a full minute ( up to 2min)
      6. Add boiling hot water while blending.
      7. Enjoy
Blending with the heavy whipping cream helps suspend the solids of the mudwtr and reduces the settling on the bottom.
I was in chronic pain in shoulder and hip. Surgery was my only option. 2 weeks after starting mudwtr, my pain was down to manageable, a month in and the pain was GONE! I might have had the same reaction to the other options, mudwtr was the first ( and only) one i’ve tried. I struggled with the flavor at first, I’m not a big pumpkin pie fan, and that’s kinda what it taste like to me. But after the results I was getting, I developed a taste for it 🙂

  10. I think this review is fair. I have bought both Ryze and Mud WTR. I like the taste of Mud WTR better. Ryze contains coffee and it smells like instant coffee. I like that Mud WTR has hints of chocolate, turmeric and chai, but their product is expensive. Healthy food in general is expensive. I think I will finish the Ryze or give to my husband and buy Mud WTR again.

  11. I think this was a very fair look and complete look at the two. I was trying hard to decide as well. I wish I could go with ryze except they say how harmful coffee is during pregnancy but their commercials is how their brand is totally safe- but, has coffee in it. I wish they both were more transparent- however, Mud watr does have some great extra ingredients- anti inflammatory and anti-vital cinnamon, tumeric, etc. so- I’m tempted to get both and try- but if the serving size is bigger with mud watr, even being slightly more expensive- no actual coffee and more anti-inflammatory ingredients would slightly win the race if you’re really trying to go more for health. If I wanted to stick with coffee, I’d go with Ryze. Originally (and based on their marketing strategy) I thought I’d get Ryze and get my husband Mud Watr, now I’m thinking if I’m trying to get pregant, we should switch

  12. First time reading one your reviews. As Far as knowing how much ingredients are really included in some of these mushroom coffee products, I wish there was a way to find out because they are being deceitful to the public. After spending all this money, you really don’t know what the hell you’re drinking.
