Green powders on table

Best Greens Powder, according to a Sports Scientist (Updated 2024)

I spent months drinking countless greens powder brands, hoping to find one that tells me what's inside, has the right clinical dosages, tastes great, and importantly, actually benefits my health.

Suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome, I've found greens powders to be a transformative solution, offering an efficient way to consume essential nutrients, especially on challenging days. They effectively fill in the nutritional gaps in our diets.

After researching 70 brands,I soon discovered that all greens powders are not created equal. Here are the some of the best greens powders that are worth trying, including my own brand: Supergreen Tonik.

The 7 Best Greens Powders in January 2024

I became obsessed with researching greens powders as the answer to fighting daily fatigue, poor immune support, and brain fog I had experienced for over 25 years since getting suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

After personally testing over 43 (and researching over 97) of the best-selling greens supplements, I narrowed it down to 7 great brands I would recommend.

How I reviewed and ranked the best greens powder

Where possible, I purchase every product I review using my own funds. I consider the ingredients used, their dosages, health benefits, taste, money-back guarantee, and monthly and per-serving costs.

#1 Supergreen Tonik (Best Greens Powder Overall)

Supergreen Tonik is not your average healthy superfood powder.

I can say this because I formulated these powdered greens from wanting an effective all-in-one supplement that helped me fight fatigue, frequent sickness, and brain fog.

Supergreen Tonik is packed with 38 scientifically proven superfoods that improve cognitive function, boost your immune system, increase energy, reduce stress, and improve overall health and well-being.

Because you get the full ingredient dosages in each serving (no under-dosing going on here!), you only need one scoop a day to get your required vitamin and mineral nutrients.

It's really easy to take each day by mixing with water or your favorite smoothie; Less than 60 seconds and you have all your vegetables, essential vitamins, minerals, and more sorted for the day.

This is the ONLY supplement in this list to offer an industry-leading 365-day money-back guarantee!

Pros

  • Packed with 38 scientifically backed superfoods for body and brain
  • Full transparency labeling – You know exactly what you’re taking
  • 365-day money-back guarantee
  • Free shipping options for continental US
  • Available in berry or mint flavors

Cons

  • Slightly higher price point (savers bundles make it cheaper than other brands)
  • Shipping costs outside of the US

#2 Kylea Greens

Kylea Health - Total Living Greens Drink

Kylea Total Living Greens is a not a new brand but has a loyal following of fans who enjoy the mix of a greens superfood powder with 12 grams of protein.

I really like the fact that the ingredients label is 99% transparent so you get to see the ingredient dosages.

The Kylea greens bag is a big one too! Each serving is a whopping 40 grams.

Overall, Kylea Greens is a solid greens and protein supplement and a great option if you can afford it.

Pros

  • Big serving size
  • Mostly transparent ingredient label
  • includes 12 grams of protein

Cons

  • Price
  • Only one flavor

#3 AG1 by Athletic Greens

Athletic Greens have recently re-branded to the shortened version AG1; everything else is the same (formula and their pricing).

AG1 was one of the first green superfood powders I came across, and I am still a fan to this day.

I enjoy the taste and like what the company is (mostly) doing.

The fact is because they hide their formula in a proprietary blend, we don't get to know the ingredient dosages.

This is a big deal because I want to know what's inside any good greens powder I take, and so should you!

This is one of the most expensive health brands and claims to be the ultimate daily supplement that includes superfoods, antioxidants, digestive enzymes, probiotics, and even mushrooms in one daily scoop.

If money is not an issue and you don’t mind NOT knowing the exact ingredient breakdown, then this all-around super greens powder could be a good choice.

Pros

  • Contains 75 ingredients, including probiotics
  • Vegan friendly
  • Tastes great in water or smoothies
  • NSF accredited

Cons

  • Proprietary blends, so unclear of the ingredient amounts
  • No free shipping options
  • Costs from $2.93 per serving

#4 Bulletproof Greens

Bulletproof Greens is a newcomer to my “best greens” list and for good reason. I am a massive fan of the biohacking company “Bulletproof” founded by Entrepreneur and author Dave Asprey.

The formula contains ingredients they claim help fuel your body and mind so you can stay on your A-Game. This includes dedicated brain nutrients albeit only two compared to the six offered by Supergreen Tonik.

The serving size is a little smaller than other brands I have recommended at 7.9 grams (34% smaller than Supergreen Tonik), and so this could mean that some of the ingredient dosages could be on the low side.

Each jar contains 30 servings and costs between $36-$46, which is a per-serving cost from $1.19 to $1.49 – this is very cost-effective for a greens powder.

Pros

  • Greens, superfoods, mushrooms, vitamins + minerals
  • Includes nootropic ingredients
  • Very affordable

Cons

  • Proprietary blend, no full disclosure of ingredient amounts
  • Some ingredients under-dosed
  • Smaller serving size

Here are my comparisons of Bulletproof Greens to other supplements:

#5 Vibrant Health Green Vibrance

Adam holding a tub of Green Vibrance Green Superfood

I liked Green Vibrance for its ingredient transparency and price but there are a couple of negative points.

There are lots of ingredients in Green Vibrance (70 in total), but thankfully all the ingredient amounts are revealed, including their amounts.

Although I quite like Green Vibrance, I even enjoyed the taste.

There are some downsides;

Similar to AG1, there are so many ingredients that the dosages of some of them suffer – in fact, just taking one serving won't deliver the minimum effective dosage to work!

This means you would need to take 2-3 servings per day to get a decent serving of some ingredients; this can make Green Vibrance a little pricey.

The last negative is the trace amounts of milk and soy and the fact they use a highly processed vanilla flavor. It reminds me of those pre-workout vanilla powders!

Pros

  • Contains 70 ingredients, full transparency labelling
  • Budget friend greens powder
  • Okay taste

Cons

  • Dosage a little low on some ingredients
  • Taking 2-3 servings per day dramatically increases daily cost

#6 Organifi Green Juice

Adam holding a tub of Organifi Green Juice

Also very popular is Organifi Green Juice developed by charismatic health blogger and youtube personality Drew Canole, who for years promoted the health benefits of juicing. These days he promotes his line of superfood powders from green, red, and even gold juices!

Each 9-gram serving of Organic Green Juice contains an organic alkaline green and a superfood blend. Unfortunately, the ingredients are wrapped in a proprietary blend, so we don’t know the exact amount of each ingredient, which is frustrating as it’s critical to know exactly what we are taking.

I like the brand, but this green juice powder lets us down on the ingredient transparency side. They offer a 60-day money-back guarantee and regular discounts for the tubs.

Pros

  • Packed with 12 superfoods
  • USDA Certified Organic
  • Okay taste

Cons

  • Proprietary blend, no full disclosure of ingredient amounts
  • Not the most affordable

Here are my comparisons of Organifi to other brands:

#7 Amazing Grass Organic Green Superfoods

Adam holding a tub of Amazing Grass Green Superfood
Adam holding a tub of Amazing Grass (Photo by Lifehacker Guy)

This Amazing Grass Green Superfood is popular with consumers on a budget. There is a wide range of flavors on offer in different sizes, too, so you should be able to find one you like.

Many of the ingredients are Organic, and the usual suspects are inside. However, the supplement label is lacking in nutritional information with no details of individual organic green superfoods serving amounts.

One real downside is the unnecessary filler or anti-caking agent called “silica” that’s included.

The taste is okay, it certainly has more of a “grassy” taste than most of the other Super Greens I have tried. But with such a low price point, this could be easily overlooked.

Pros

  • Over 20 ingredients, including probiotics
  • Choice of flavors
  • Budget friendly

Cons

  • Proprietary blend, no full disclosure of ingredient amounts
  • Tastes a little grassy
  • Serving size small

What are Greens Powders?

Green powders are made from greens and vegetables and often include nutrients like antioxidants, probiotics, digestive enzymes, and protein powders.

They make consuming these nutrient-dense whole foods easier as you can conveniently mix them with water, juice, or even add them to your morning smoothie.

Plant-based supplements that contain organic healthy fruit and vegetables are getting more popular each year. I began consuming green powders as nutritional insurance back in late 2018 and rarely skip a day!

Taking premium quality super greens to drink like Supergreen Tonik gives me peace of mind, knowing I’m getting all my nutrients in just one scoop a day.

Green superfood smoothies

Health Benefits of a Greens Blend Superfood

We know the importance of eating a healthy, well-balanced diet, but what specifically do super greens powders do for your body?

Health sites such as Healthline, Harvard Medical, WebMD, and PubMed, are excellent sources of information specifically regarding the benefits of each ingredient found in super greens.

Improved Energy Levels

These antioxidant-packed green powders can really pack a punch, providing a natural alternative to caffeine-based drinks, without the inevitable crash.

Immune Support

A strong immune system is important in today’s global environment. Nutrient-dense greens contain the fundamental building blocks of a strong immune system, often containing lots of vitamins, minerals, and other healthy nutrients.

The effectiveness of fighting sickness will depend on the formula's type and dosage of ingredients. Taking greens powders for immunity was one of the main reasons I first started looking at these powdered supplements.

Mental Clarity and Well-being

Some brands contain brain nutrients that can improve memory, concentration, mental clarity, and overall cognitive health.

Green formulas containing herbs called adaptogens can also help you adapt to stress and reduce anxiety, which means a calmer and more relaxed day.

Improved Digestion and Bloating

A great diet depends on absorbing the nutrients in your gut; this is where digestive enzymes and probiotics play a role.

The addition of fiber in greens can also help with having more regular bowel movements too!

Anti-inflammatory

The effects of acute and chronic inflammation on the body have severe consequences for healthy living.

Consuming a good quality greens powder for inflammation can be just the longer-term support to consume anti-inflammatory ingredients for your health.

Weight Loss

Most superfood supplements see weight management as more a secondary benefit that can work by eliminating cravings, and so naturally suppressing your appetite.

Some superfood powders can aid weight loss better than others, check the link for my round-up of best products.

How To Choose The Best Green Powder?

It’s clear from the benefits that consuming superfood supplements is worth considering, but just how do you go about picking the best greens powders?

Firstly, don’t be bamboozled by marketing jargon and what seem like amazing deals; it’s important to look beyond the hype and understand what you’re really putting inside your body.

Remember, not all green superfood supplements are made equal. Supplement companies are very clever at promoting their formula, whether in a pill or powder. When I delved into different green superfood supplements in my reviews, I often felt let down and that the products lacked transparency.

This was my motivation to create the best greens supplement brand on the market, and the outcome was Supergreen Tonik. I have addressed all the major factors that should be considered when looking to purchase a super greens powder.

IMPORTANT Considerations When Choosing Greens Superfood

  • Ingredients and Amounts – The effectiveness of any supplement is based on its ingredients and amounts in the formula. Each ingredient should be present in the minimum effective dosage in order to work
  • Serving Size – Following on from the ingredient amount point, a small serving size and lots of ingredients means it is unlikely to contain enough of each to be as effective as stated
  • Ingredient Transparency – I want to know exactly what I am taking, so a full list of each ingredient and their amounts on the label
  • Cost Effective – I don't tend to reach for the cheapest brand in anything as I believe in value. Sometimes the upfront cost may seem expensive when in fact it works out to be most cost effective
  • Money-back Guarantee – It's reassuring when a company stands behind their brand. Ideally want to see a guarantee of some sort, the longer the better
  • Good Taste – It needs to taste at least okay, ideally the powder should be palatable when mixed just with cold water
  • Company Pedigree – Not essential this one, but I think it is nice to know who is behind the company

Only one green superfood powder ticks every box in the list above, and for a good reason. My supplement was developed based on the core principles above.

But, please don't just take my word for it, take a look for yourself, visit https://humantonik.com and see for yourself.

Frequently asked Questions

If superfood powders or powdered greens are new to you then you may have a few questions. Let me address some of the frequently asked greens powder questions here.

Are Green Supplements Worth It?

Yes, superfood supplements are worth taking as long as they contain good-quality ingredients in the right dosages.

You have to be wary of companies selling supplements because you need to ensure you buy a good quality supplement that contains ingredients in the right dosage.

The highest quality greens powder is not going to be cheap, mainly because it should contain a good amount of top-quality nutrients. The cost can be anywhere between $50 – $97 per month for popular brands.

Whether the cost of investing in a supplement is worth it for you, will depend on your lifestyle, and if you eat a well-balanced and nutritious diet.

Should I Take Super Greens?

A powdered green supplement can be a great way to improve your overall health and wellbeing because they contain vitamins, minerals, oxidants, and in many cases other beneficial nutrients you may not get in your diet.

Greens powders are often considered much better than multivitamins as they are more nutrient-dense and easy to digest.

Are Powdered greens as good as fresh?

You can never fully replace fresh greens from your own garden. That’s not to say that greens powders aren’t a healthy alternative. Ideally, you should consume superfood supplements alongside a balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables.

Supplementing with superfoods alongside your regular diet is the best way to ensure you’re consuming your required intake of greens.

Can a Greens Supplement Boost My Immunity?

Many of the top greens powders contain ingredients that have been proven to support your immune system and can help to fight off the flu.

As well as supplying vitamins like A, B, C, E, K, and other minerals, greens powders are an excellent source of antioxidants and phytonutrients.

If you are deficient in these nutrients, them consuming one of these superfood drinks daily will help plug any nutritional gaps you may have.

Best Time to Have Greens Powder?

There is no one best time to consume a greens powder as this depends very much on your schedule. If you are following an intermittent fasting schedule, you would need to have your greens powder during your eating window.

Having your greens powder drink first thing in the morning is popular with many consumers as they feel it sets them up for the day ahead.

Do Powdered Greens Expire?

Greens powders typically last 2-years from the date of manufacture. After this two-year shelf life, the greens will become less potent and beneficial.

All greens supplements should have either a manufactured date or expiry date on their label. So, if you’re in doubt check your greens label or reach out to the manufacturer to check.

Creating my Super Greens Supplement

Greens Powders 2024 Verdict

Although powerful greens supplements are available, they aren't a license to neglect your diet and start eating whatever you want.

The best way to look at superfood supplements is to remember the word “supplement” – they are meant to “supplement” an already well-balanced diet.

I take my supplement every day not just to top up my nutrients but to get other ingredients not typically found in your everyday diet. Ingredients such as Ashwagandha Root and Rhodiola Rosea have proven benefits for improving productivity, reducing levels of perceived stress, and numerous health benefits.

If you find your diet is lacking or want to ensure you are getting your optimal greens daily, then choosing one of these superfood powders could be the answer.

  1. Is it okay to put greens powder in my protein smoothie? Or is it better to consume greens powder on an empty stomach by itself?

    1. Hey summer,
Although there is no gluten in the Supergreen Tonik formula because the Barley Grass may have come in contact with the seeds, we wouldn’t be able to say the supplement is gluten-free. We like to be cautious to ensure no one who is particularly sensitive has an issue.
      Regards,
      Adam

  2. I realize you are reviewing greens here, but the container of Organifi Gold I bought lists ingredients which are not mentioned on the website, several which I do not tolerate. I would not have purchased their product had I known in advance!

Quoting your article, “They do offer a 60-day money-back guarantee and regular discounts on offer for the tubs.”
True, but have you read their money-back guarantee? How on earth could one possibly satisfy their refund policy conditions! Check it out.
Have you tried contacting them to discuss a refund? Also totally impossible!
A total scam in my experience !!!

    1. Hi Izzy,
Thank you for commenting and highlighting these issues. I will take a look at these and follow up and edit any reviews accordingly. Sorry to hear about your experience.
      Adam

  3. Hello Adam,

Thank you for all your hard work, it helps a lot. And hope you and your family are doing great.
My wife and I tried Amazing Grass-Green Superfood. We liked the results, but I research a lot too to try to find the best of the best. We tried a local superfood/greens but it was too sweet. So I research and found a review that said “Nutra Champs-Super Greens” we’re better than Amazing Grass. I search in your site to see if you have reviewed it but found nothing. I am pretty sure you have come across with it. Hopefully you can direct me to your review if you already post it. In the mean time we are going to try your Supergreen Tonik.

    Cheers!
    Alberto

  4. I have been taking the morning complete and find it to give me terrible, gas, bloating and belly pressure. What would you recommend in lieu of this product that will not cause these digestive issues. Thank so much!!

  5. Is it ok to consume green superfoods and coffee in the same? I’m looking to introduce one of these options to my supplements routine but don’t want to overpower my energy supplement with my drinking coffee every morning. Do you think I’d be okay if I did the super greens midday several hours after my coffee?

    1. Hey Melisa,
Thank you for commenting and apologies for taking so long to reply (I miss it!).
I would space out the timing for consuming greens and coffee. I typically take my greens in the afternoon as I enjoy taking it then. I also tend to follow intermittent fasting and so just black coffee in the morning.
Otherwise, you could grab your coffee if you prefer first thing and then have a greens mid-morning would also work well.
      Adam

  6. Superfood powders and greens can help you to lose weight if they are combined with a healthy diet and fitness regime. If taken before a meal, studies find that super greens can improve your probiotics, digestion and also increase satiety, helping you to feel fuller.

    1. Thanks Eric,
That’s right, there are no magic slimming cures. Powdered greens are a great way to top-up with all your nutrients, more than you would just taking a multivitamin capsule, and they are low in calories too (typically 40-50 kcals per serving).
      Adam

  7. Hi Adam. Thanks for publishing this list. I am always looking for the best things to put into my body. When I was reviewing your list I noticed that you did not have a certain brand on your list. Are you familiar with Vitamineral Green? It is manufactured by Healthforce Superfoods. It has a lot of positive customer reviews but I haven’t noticed any expert reviews. I’ve been trying it and like it, but am curious if you have tested it or reviewed it.
