How to use Beet Powders (the right way)

First things first, though: What are reds powders?

You may be familiar with greens powders, but it’s far less likely you’re accustomed to seeing their red counterpart.

By definition, reds powders are formulas that contain mostly red ingredients: things like berries, beetroots, tomatoes, goji berries, etc.

Reds powders are known for their impressive antioxidant effects; many of their ingredients have a high ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) score.

High-ORAC compounds may slow aging by improving cellular turnover and regeneration.

If [this concept is] borne out in further research, young and middle-aged people may be able to reduce risk of diseases of aging —including senility — simply by adding high-ORAC foods to their diets

Says one government-backed research program. (Source)

And this concept isn’t just mere theory.

For many reds powder enthusiasts, reds provide a difference they can feel!

They’re getting more and more popular as a result. If current trends continue, they’ll eventually be just as known and loved as greens powders.

Speaking of greens powders, you can click here to read our in-depth review of them.

Anyways, back to Total Beets. As you might expect, this particular red powder gets its bright color from beetroots. Before disclosing its full ingredient list, though, let’s talk a little bit about the brand behind Total Beets.

Red superfood powder supplements

The Brand Behind the Beets

Force Factor is a global nutrition brand with humble roots. Force Factor was founded by two former Harvard U rowers in 2009 in order to meet their own need for quality supplements.

These athletes had grown tired of the overly basic, underpowered supplements available to Ivy League competitors. They decided to create a solution to their problem — and Force Factor was the result. The brand became a success within just months of launching, becoming one of GNC’s top-selling products.

Force Factor aims to “[help] men and women achieve daily success with smart supplements based on the latest science.”

Most of their products keep things simple and feature one or two primary science-backed, clinically-proven ingredients.

And while we can’t verify exactly how big their customer base is, Force Factor claims that they’re “trusted by millions of fitness enthusiasts, athletes, hard-working professionals, and other men and women of all ages.”

Among their many product offerings are:

It’s probably safe to say that Force Factor has something for everybody. At least if you’re trying to burn fat, build muscle, boost testosterone, recover faster, think better, or perform at your highest level.

The brand also claims it created “some of the most novel formulas and [won] numerous awards in the process.” This may sound like marketing hype, and it is the marketing-type language…but it appears to be true. Total Beets really was one of the first products of its kind. Let’s take a closer look.

What are Total Beets?

Total Beets Original Powder is a reds powder and drink mix that contains natural beetroot and other nitric oxide (NO) boosters, notably a unique form of betaine nitrate called NO3-T® nitrate.

By boosting your body’s ability to produce nitric oxide, Total Beets aims to increase blood flow and circulation. This boost may lead to improved athletic performance (and sexual performance, if you’re going for that kind of thing).

Better still, the relationship between athletic performance and NO is bidirectional. NO can help increase your workout performance…and working out can help you naturally boost your NO!

It’s possible that supplementing with nitric oxide can allow you to adapt and get the most out of the workout routine you’re already doing, as one study explains (Source).

NO is supposed to improve sports performance, promote recovery, and benefit the athlete's health with its physiological support in vasodilatation, blood flow, and mitochondrial respiration […] Physical activity and nitric oxide results to be related.

Total Beets: Ingredients

As you might expect, beets are the primary active ingredient in Total Beets. This product also contains the NO3-T® betaine nitrate we mentioned earlier.

Active ingredients in Total Beets

One thing we like about Total Beets is that they disclose the precise amount of these active ingredients in their product.

They do mention a “Total Beets Superblend” on the Total Beets label, sure, but we’re thankful to report that this 5,000-milligram blend is aptly divided into its individual components.

Each serving of Total Beets contains:

  • 3,000mg of beetroot powder
  • 2,000mg of NO3-T® betaine nitrate

To get these same values from fresh beets, Force Factor claims you’d need to eat 7 of them!

Other ingredients in Total Beets

Total Beets also contains several flavoring agents and fillers.

These ‘other’ ingredients include:

  • Natural flavors
  • Maltodextrin
  • Silicon dioxide
  • Citric acid
  • Stevia

Don’t let the chemical-sounding names here scare you. Silicon dioxide is a naturally occurring compound; according to the EFSA Panel on Food Additives, silicon dioxide/silicic acid gel that’s added to food supplements is safe up to 1,500 mg SiO2/day. That’s much, much more than you could get by taking supplements. (Source)

Total Beets: Made in the USA

In addition to being a science-backed company, Force Factor is a proudly American one. All of their vitamins and supplements are produced, formulated, tested, and distributed from the USA.

Force Factor’s products come from GMP-certified, FDA-audited facilities located throughout the Country.

Total Beets: Potential Benefits

Total Beets’ ability to boost NO production gives it various downstream health benefits. Force Factor says to expect:

more energy, endurance, and stamina without having to use heart-straining stimulants.

(Many of their customers do indeed report these benefits…but more on what customers say later.)

Total Beets’ potential benefits can be divided into four major categories:

Heart health

Beetroot powder's nitrate content allows it to directly improve cardiovascular function.

Don’t forget that each serving of Total Beets' contains the same amount of natural nitrates as roughly 7 fresh beets.

That’s a whole lot of extra nitric oxide going straight to your muscles — including your heart muscle.

One week of daily dosing with BRJ (inorganic nitrate) significantly improves submaximal aerobic endurance and blood pressure in elderly patients [with heart failure].

According to a 2016 study found. (Source)

Healthy food alongside blood pressure gauge

Better circulation

This product's beet-derived nitrates and NO3-T nitrates enhance your body’s nitric oxide production, resulting in expanded blood vessels, enhanced circulation, and more consistent nutrient delivery.

In addition to boosting athletic performance, this improved circulation has unexpected benefits.

It may reduce the visible signs of aging and help your body better regulate its temperature.

Better endurance

The faster your body is able to supply its muscles with fresh, oxygen-rich blood, the faster you’ll be able to bike/swim/run/hike/spar.

Beetroots’ ability to increase athletic performance is perhaps its best-known benefit.

Expect a rush of energy to occur within about an hour of taking Total Beets.

This product may have cumulative benefits, too, so be sure to take it consistently.

A great taste

This last benefit may not be experienced by everybody.

That’s because the taste of beets is, well, fairly polarizing. Some people love it; others hate it.

Total Beets’ beety flavor is paired with pomegranate/berry notes that most customers seem to enjoy.

But you might just have to try this product out for yourself to be sure…

What do customers say about Total Beets?

Another thing we like about Force Factor? They make it super easy for prospective customers to find and read product reviews.

Total Beets’ reviews are also pretty solid.

On Force Factor’s website the product has 239 reviews at an average of 4.5 stars each.

“It works!” one enthusiastic customer says.

“[…] I needed energy and [blood pressure] help. I bought Force Factor powder and it has given me loads of energy and helped with my BP. I am getting through the taste… I add a little honey to my drink. […] Been taking this for 2 weeks now. Very noticeable improvement [in] my energy level.”

If we had to summarize this review, we’d say that Total Beets’ cardiovascular benefits make it worth taking — even for those who don’t like the taste.

Other customers prize the convenience factor that powdered beets afford them:

I like including beets in my juices, but it's such a hassle and a bit messy. This powder is a great alternative and it tastes great! I can use this powder in water, juice, or smoothies and I get the equivalent of 7 beets which is nuts.

Total Beets has some pretty good reviews on Amazon, too, with 1,600+ reviews averaging 4.3 stars each.

One enthusiastic review, titled “I HATE beets,” pretty much says it all:

Love this product though. Great check up at my cardiologist. A welcomed side-effect has been crazy solid erections. Love this stuff and apparently my wife does too.

How much do Total Beets cost?

Total Beets is quite affordable.

A 30-serving package normally costs $25.96, but as of right now it’s on sale for $15.98.

There doesn’t appear to be any discounted subscription option for buying in bulk.

Though you may not need one if Total Beets costs barely more than 50 cents a day.

Total Beets: Where to Buy

You can buy Total Beets at Amazon, iHerb, Walmart, GNC, The Vitamin Shoppe, CVS, and on their website, of course.

Total Beets: My Verdict

There’s not much to dislike about Total Beets.

It's a simple, straightforward, affordable product!

The one real tangible downside to Total Beets — its taste — is only a problem with a subset of customers.

  1. I buy and use Total Beets and really enjoy the product

I find out that Walmart is the least expensive place to buy them.

QUESTION-Will a Total Beet powder be more successful for your
    blood pressure or a 10/25 b/p pill?

    1. Rick,
I have been trying to reduce my high blood pressure (HBP) over a decade. I have been on 3 different HBP meds for over a decade. About 3 months ago, I started taking Total Beets, Smarter Greens, and a celery based green juice every morning. My HBP has dramatically decreased, and I have been able to eliminate one of the meds, and cut the other two in half dosage wise. Since I have done the 3 things above, I can’t attribute the total improvement to Total Beets, but I am sold on its benefits and will continue to use forever.

  2. i just bought it, i will write back with the results in a few weeks! the price is much better then the competitors!

  3. The jar claims you get 30 scoops but only deliver 27 so your paying for only 27 not thirty, I called them about this and they nicely kinda said they won’t do anything about it,just beware they’re shorting you 3 scoops which is three days☹️

      1. Hi Kelly,
Gummies or capsules are unlikely to be as effective as a powder supplement IF the size of the ingredient formula is smaller. Check the label and look at the serving size per gummy (or per day) and compare to that of a powder supplement. Often you’ll find a tiny amount in the gummy/tablet/capsule.
Be wary of gummies that only show a proprietary blend without even showing the ingredient weights in the formula. The effectiveness of ANY supplement is down to its ingredient weight.
